Now, we all like to overdo it on the strawberry daiquiris from time to time, but if you get in your motor and drive after – you’re a nob, plain and simple.
With drink driving accounting for a whopping 16% of all UK road deaths, it’s still an important issue, but what’s surprising is over 17% of drink drive prosecutions aren’t at night – they take place on the morning after.
In fact, recent statistics have shown that up to 40% of UK drinkers have driven in the morning unaware that they’re still over the limit. And most of ‘em are normal, sensible people like and me who wouldn’t dream of driving home from the pub after a skin-full.
UK laws are getting tougher, police are cracking down on offenders and rightly so as nobody wants to be at risk, but how do you know if you’re back to zero and safe to drive? You get on to AlcoDigital and grab yourself one of their personal breathalysers. Here’s three of our favourite new releases…
BEST BREATHALYSER FOR UNDER £100
AL7000 – PRICE £90
We reckon this is the best AL7000 breathalyser on the market for under 100-quid because, unlike many, it’s not going to be a waste of space after a year of use.
You see, to give a true reading all breathalysers need recalibrating every 12-months but, as this one is a part of their unique ‘Swap & Go’ range, it allows you to quickly change the sensor yourself for about £18.
Its advanced semi-conductor sensor is one of the most scientifically sound out there pulling in accurate figures to ±0.01% BAC. We like the hard case and in-car power lead, too.
TOP VALUE FUEL CELL BREATHALYSER
PLATINUM LITE – PRICE £130
The breathalysers used by Mr Plod and chums start at around 800-quid a pop and that’s because, legally, they have to use the most advanced ‘fuel cell’ sensors for the best in reliability and accuracy.
This sort of high-level tech isn’t common for personal items (there’s only a few of these in the whole world) but the AlcoDigital Platinum Lite here has to be by far the best value we’ve seen.
Using the same fuel cell sensor as its big brother below, it’s accurate to ±0.005% BAC, offers a nice easy-to-understand screen and a trick slide-out mouthpiece – very James Bond indeed.
MOST ADVANCED BREATHALYSER
PLATINUM – PRICE £180
If you’re looking for the daddy of all personal breathalysers, you’ve found it. The AlcoDigital Platinum one not only combines the accuracy of fuel cell technology with the ‘Swap & Go’ convenience of the AL7000, but it’s also the breathalyser of choice for racing driver, Ben Collins.
The former Stig himself says, “You cannot drive safely with any alcohol in your body, and the cost of a breathalyser is nothing compared with the consequences of getting it wrong.” And, we have to say, he’s got a point.
Apart from the reassuringly solid feel, what’s amazing about this one is that the replaceable sensor cartridge also contains all the working parts so, when the time comes to swap it out, you’re essentially getting a whole new unit every time. No messing about.
